Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, of Kogi State has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Professor Nuhu Omeiza Yaqub, hailing him as a symbol of academic brilliance, integrity, and fearless advocacy for justice.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Ismaila Isah, the Governor described Professor Yaqub’s passing as an irreparable loss to Kogi State, Nigeria, and the global academic community. He acknowledged Yaqub’s legacy as a champion of intellectual development and principled leadership both within and outside public service.
Governor Ododo extended his condolences to the Ohinoyi of Ebira land, His Royal Majesty Alhaji Ahmed Tijani Muhammed Anaje, the people of Kogi State, and the family of the late scholar.
He prayed for Allah’s comfort and strength for the bereaved family and the peaceful repose of the departed.
“Professor Nuhu Yaqub was more than an academic; he was a voice of reason and courage—a man who stood firmly for truth, fairness, and progress.
His impactful service as an administrator and educator continues to shape the lives of many,” Ododo stated.
Born on March 3, 1951, in Okene, Kogi State, Professor Nuhu Yaqub built an enviable academic and administrative career. He served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja between 2004 and 2009, where he championed reforms that elevated the institution’s profile.
His leadership journey continued as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Sokoto State University (2012–2017) and later as the Dean of Postgraduate Studies at Nile University of Nigeria (2017–2019).
Colleagues and students alike have described him as a mentor, reformer, and visionary, whose impact transcended the lecture halls and administrative offices he occupied.
Professor Yaqub’s death on January 4, 2025, in Abuja, following a brief illness, came as a shock to many who admired his unwavering dedication to education and development. His remains were laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites, marking the end of a remarkable life dedicated to service.
Governor Ododo urged Nigerians, particularly the youth and academic community, to emulate Professor Yaqub’s values of hard work, integrity, and selfless service.
“As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the ideals he stood for. His legacy should serve as a beacon for those aspiring to make a difference in society,” the governor added.
The late professor leaves behind a rich legacy of scholarship and leadership, inspiring future generations to pursue excellence and integrity in their pursuits.
“Kogi State and Nigeria will forever honor his memory,” Governor Ododo concluded.
