A video showing a military-style parade allegedly organized in honor of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, has sparked widespread debate, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar calling for a full investigation into the incident.
The viral footage, which surfaced online, depicted a group of armed individuals in uniform performing military drills and saluting the President’s son. The incident has divided public opinion, with critics questioning its legality and appropriateness, while supporters argue it was symbolic and intended to honor leadership.
Atiku, in a statement released by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, condemned the act, describing it as a “desecration of military traditions.” He insisted that the Nigerian Armed Forces must remain insulated from partisanship and any form of nepotism.
He further raised concerns about the group involved, identified as the “Nigeria Cadet Network,” stating it is not recognized by the Nigerian military and questioning its authority to conduct such activities. Atiku called for an investigation into the legality of the group, its possession of firearms, and its connection to security operatives.
However, sources close to the Tinubu family have downplayed the incident, clarifying that the event was organized by youth supporters under a voluntary paramilitary-style group as a show of solidarity, not an official military endorsement.
One of the event organizers, who spoke anonymously, stated, “The parade was simply an honor by a youth-based civic group, not the military. Seyi Tinubu has been a role model to many young people, and this was their way of showing appreciation.”
The controversy has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians. While some argue that the display was inappropriate and sent the wrong message about power and privilege, others believe it was a harmless gesture by enthusiastic supporters.
Political analyst Dr. Amina Yusuf commented, “The backlash is understandable given Nigeria’s sensitivity to issues of power abuse, but it’s important to establish whether this was an official military event or a civilian gathering mimicking the military.”
