The controversy surrounding Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s pledge to fund projects worth over ₦250 million for the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) has thrown up deeper tensions over equitable resource distribution in the State.
While the governor described the move as an effort to address community needs, critics, including the Kwara North Development Commission (KNDC), argue that it reinforces systemic favoritism toward Ilorin Emirate at the expense of other regions.
KNDC’s threat of legal action underscored growing demands for transparency and fairness in governance. The group insisted that using state resources to support sectional projects could fuel disunity and deepen regional marginalization, particularly for communities in Kwara North.
Governor Abdulrazaq, however, defendd his actions, dismissing criticisms as politically motivated.
He pointed to past interventions in other regions and emphasized his administration’s commitment to development across the state.
Yet, KNDC’s concerns raise pressing questions about balancing cultural preservation with broader state-wide development goals and accountability in governance.
