IGP Orders Immediate Investigation into Kogi Boat Tragedy

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered an immediate investigation into the boat mishap that occurred on November 29, 2024, in Kogi State.
The tragic incident, which took place along the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways of the River Niger in Kupa Local Government Area, involved over 160 passengers, with 24 rescued and many still unaccounted for.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and assured that the Police would coordinate with relevant agencies for a swift rescue operation. He emphasized that the investigation would identify the root causes of the incident and develop preventive measures to enhance waterway safety.

The IGP also called on waterway operators and other stakeholders to collaborate with the Force Marine Department to ensure the safety of passengers and operators. The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to improving the safety and security of the nation’s waterways.
