The Kogi State Government has initiated plans to establish a special economic zone with free trade status in the Ajaokuta economic development corridor.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, during a visit to NEPZA’s Managing Director, Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi, in Abuja, sought NEPZA’s collaboration to accelerate the project, which has been in the pipeline for over a decade.
Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Ismaila Isah quoted him to have emphasized that the special economic zone will unlock the state’s vast economic potential.
Strategically located as a bridge between northern and southern Nigeria, Kogi boasts of abundant mineral resources, fertile land for agriculture, and a skilled workforce poised for industrial growth.
“The special economic zone will harness Kogi’s natural resources and create thousands of jobs, making the state a hub for economic activity and a destination for investment,” Governor Ododo stated.
He assured that the state government is prepared to meet all necessary requirements to fast-track the project’s realization.

In response, NEPZA’s Dr. Ogunyemi pledged full support, committing to expedite approvals, licensing, and guidance to help Kogi establish the economic zone. He also commended the governor’s commitment to infrastructure, worker welfare, and security.

The boat incident had claimed the lives of many market women traveling from the state to neighboring Niger State.

In a statement personally signed by the senator, Echocho conveyed profound sympathy, urging the bereaved to find solace in the face of the devastating tragedy.
He offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the deceased and comfort for the grieving families.

The Igala Youth Council (IYC) has strongly condemned the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for listing the Igala nation as part of the proposed “United States of Biafra.” The IYC’s stance was made clear during an emergency meeting held on December 1, 2024, in response to a viral video in which IPOB outlined its vision for a 40-state Biafran nation.

In a statement, the IYC’s National Publicity Secretary, Michael Achor Joshua, criticized IPOB for failing to consult the Igala people, emphasizing that the Igala nation firmly rejects any inclusion in IPOB’s secessionist agenda. “We were not invited to any discussions, nor do we support IPOB’s ambitions. Our focus is on achieving good governance within the Nigerian state, not being drawn into what we consider madness,” Joshua declared.

The IYC urged all Igala people worldwide to ignore IPOB’s claims and continue with their lawful pursuits. The council stressed that the Igala nation remains committed to the unity and development of Nigeria.

IPOB’s inclusion of the Igala nation has sparked widespread controversy. The group, which advocates for the secession of the Southeast and other regions from Nigeria, has faced criticism for its disruptive tactics, including the imposition of a weekly “sit-at-home” order that has adversely affected the economy and daily life in the Southeast.

The IYC’s statement reflects growing resistance to IPOB’s secessionist agenda, with the council reiterating its commitment to national unity and peace.
