The Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party (LP) has declared its full support for the Chief Ugochukwu Emeh and Okoli Akirika-led Anambra State Executive, endorsing their decision to abstain from the upcoming Anambra State Local Government elections.
The election, scheduled for September 28, 2024, has been criticized for alleged violations of the Electoral Act.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Interim National Chairperson of the LP Caretaker Committee, Senator Nenadi Usman, the party leadership aligned with the Anambra executive, citing concerns about the legality of the election process.

“The National Leadership of the Labour Party is fully aware of and in total support of the decision of the Anambra State leadership, headed by Chief Ugochukwu Emeh (Chairman) and Okoli Akirika Esq (Secretary), to boycott the upcoming election due to the violation of the Electoral Act and the Nigerian Constitution,” the statement read.

Usman emphasized that the Labour Party is currently engaged in legal battles regarding the election, including cases filed at the Anambra State High Court (Suit No. A/265/2024) and the Federal High Court (Suit No. FHC/CV/AWK/223/2024), challenging the procedure and legitimacy of the local government election.
She clarified that the party had not sponsored any candidates for the contested election.

The statement further confirmed that the National Caretaker Committee has not established any new caretaker committees in any state, reiterating that the Anambra State Labour Party remains under the leadership of Chief Ugochukwu Emeh and Okoli Akirika.

The party’s position and actions, according to Usman, are for official and record purposes, reinforcing the Labour Party’s stance on the matter.

Ahmadu Fintiri

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has expressed his deep dissatisfaction with the outcome of the September 21 Edo State governorship election
He labeled the process a shameful attack on Nigeria’s democracy. Fintiri’s comments followed the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) declaration of Monday Okpebholo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the poll.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday, Governor Fintiri said he was dismayed by the irregularities that marred the election. “I weep for Nigeria’s democracy after witnessing the shameful Edo gubernatorial poll,” Fintiri stated. He accused the APC of orchestrating widespread electoral malpractice to secure the governorship seat.

Fintiri raised concerns about the presence of APC leaders, including the party’s national chairman, who reportedly arrived in Edo on election day despite movement restrictions. He further alleged that APC governors used armored convoys to intimidate voters at polling stations.

“This blatant disregard for democratic norms is the real brigandage,” Fintiri said, referencing complaints from voters and observers about disruptions in the collation process, allegations of vote-buying, and suspicious voting numbers. He questioned the validity of the results, noting discrepancies where votes exceeded the number of accredited voters.

The governor condemned the actions of INEC, accusing the electoral body of favoring the APC and compromising the fairness of the election. He warned that such behavior threatens the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy, calling it a “rape of democracy” that must be addressed.

Fintiri concluded by urging Nigerians and the international community to demand accountability, stressing that democracy in Nigeria is under attack. “The world is watching, and Nigeria deserves better,” he added.

The controversy surrounding the Edo election has sparked debate nationwide, with many calling for electoral reforms to prevent future irregularities.
