Reps Panel Hosts National Workshop to Strengthen Open Government in Nigeria
In a significant move to promote transparency and accountability in public institutions across Nigeria, the House of Representatives Committee on Freedom of Information (FOI) is set to host a National Workshop on Freedom of Information.
The workshop, scheduled for September 24-25, 2024, is organized in collaboration with the Rebirth for Media Liberation and Development Initiative (RMDI).
Led by the Chairman of the House Committee on FOI, Rt. Hon. Saidu Yusuf Miga and the head of RMDI, Engr. Bala Musa, the initiative programed to cascade the across the thirty-six states of the federation, for widespread impact.
The workshop will feature the presentation of a new publication titled “Freedom of Information Act: Gateway to Open Government and Accountability in Nigeria.”
The book is poised to serve as a crucial resource for understanding and implementing the FOI Act, which was enacted on May 28, 2011.
According to a statement by Augustine Akubo the Consultant to the Committee, the event will gather key stakeholders, including Permanent Secretaries, Directors-General, Chief Executives of Parastatals, and heads of various governmental departments, to enhance their understanding of the FOI Act and their obligations under it.
The workshop seeks to empower participants with the knowledge to uphold citizens’ rights to access information, improve record-keeping practices, and foster a culture of transparency and accountability within public service.
“Access to public records and information is vital for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, improving lives, and ensuring inclusive governance,” Augustine emphasized.
“This workshop is crucial for entrenching probity and open leadership at all levels of governance.”
According to him, the book to be presented at the workshop explores the history and efficacy of FOI laws in Nigeria, highlighting their role in mitigating corruption and promoting equitable development.
“The publication also examines the challenges and opportunities in implementing FOI laws in the Nigerian public sector, with the aim of making open government a way of life in the country.”
The national workshop he said, is expected to be a key step towards reinforcing the principles of open government in Nigeria, as it provides a platform for top management leaders and public officers to deepen their understanding of the FOI Act and its significance in ensuring accountability and good governance.
