The FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has canvassed for the formal incorporation of debates into the curriculum of public schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
She reaffirmed that debates are crucial for nurturing critical thinking, effective communication, and an appreciation for diverse perspectives among students.
A statement by her special adviser on media, Austin Elemue said she made the remarks at the grand finale of the 2024 “Head to Head Debate Reality House,” organized by the FCT Universal Basic Education Board in collaboration with the FCT Reform Coordination and Service Improvement.
Represented by Mrs. Grace Adayilo, Mahmoud highlighted that debates go beyond mere competition; they are essential tools for developing students’ ability to analyze issues from multiple angles and engage in constructive dialogue.
She commended the participants for their maturity and insight, noting that these skills will serve them well in the future.
The event also featured contributions from the Acting Executive Chairman of the FCT Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Alhassan Sule, who reiterated the importance of education in society.
The chairman of The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman Mr. Ola Olukoyode, represented by Aisha Mohammed, urged students to embrace values like integrity and accountability, highlighting the role of youth in combating corruption.
The grand finale of the debate saw JSS Kubwa and JSS Dutse Alhaji 2 compete on the topic “Poverty: A Threat to School Population,” as the event ended with the presentation of awards to the students.
