Hunger Protest: Police arrest 212 suspected hoodlums in Jigawa

The Jigawa state police command has arrested 212 hoodlums suspected to have looted and vandalized public properties in various parts of the state during EndBadGovernance protest.

This was disclosed by the state commissioner of police, Mr Ahmed Tijjani Abdullahi while addressing news men over the security situation in the state
He said so far 74 of them have been charged to court.
The police boss provided an update on the situation and the measures being taken to restore law and order in the State.

Abdullahi stated that the Nigeria police in conjunction with sister security agencies in the state recovered 50 Motorcycles, 50 Tricycle, 12 Bicycles and nine chairs.

According to him “other items recovered included 303 bags of fertilizer, 54 Cartons of mosquito nets, two bags of Rice and office furnitures”.

“You may recall that in anticipation of the planned protest, series of proactive measures were taken to prevent violence and protect lives and properties.These measures included intelligence gathering and surveillance, deployment of additional security personnel to potential hotspots and engagement with critical stakeholders such as pressure groups, hoteliers, council of Ulamas, youth group, CLOs, members of ACMORAN, NURTW e.t.c”.

He said they deployed other processes like community engagement and outreach programmes, monitoring of social media platforms, regular operation show of force, monitoring the activities of community leaders and influencers and expanded to all encompassing town hall meeting organized by the state government.

“Despite these efforts, on day one of the protest, some unscrupulous and unpatriotic elements who were bent on destabilizing the polity, decided to use and engaged teenagers leading to violence and destruction of public properties especially at palliative stores Yalwawa, Shuwarin and Government House in Dutse metropolis”.

He noted that, “The teenagers have showed unruly behavior, refusing to listen to our appeals. They have ignored warning and pleas to desist from violence, instead choose to engage in destructive behavior”.

“Their actions have resulted in widespread destruction of government properties and disruption of economic activities”, he emphasised.

Abdullahi maintained that “When all appeals failed. The security agencies were left with no option than to use minimum force to disperse the violent protesters. However, the violent protest spread to some Local Government areas such as Hadejia, B/Kudu, Gumel, Kazaure and Babura LGAs”.

“To address the situation, additional personnel and equipment had to be deployed to affected areas”.

He added that “based on the security advice and wider consultation with heads of security agencies, 24hrs curfew was declared across the state on 1st August, 2024 with a view to curtailing the spread of violence and also ensure protection of lives and properties of the law-abiding citizens in the state”.

According to him, the 24-hour curfew is a necessary measure to restore peace and stability and allow the security agencies to contain the situation and prevent further destruction.
Explaining further, he indicated that it is gratifying to observe that there is substantial compliance with the curfew by members of the public across the state.

He warned that anyone or group of persons found engaging in activities likely to disrupt the peace in the state will be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the law.

Jigawa College of Education Matriculates 420 Undergraduate Students

The Jigawa State College of Education Gumel has matriculated 420 new undergraduate students in affiliation with Bayero University Kano (BUK).
The students, comprising the 11th cohort of the institution’s undergraduate program, were admitted into various educational and teaching disciplines after fulfilling all admission requirements.

Speaking during the matriculation ceremony, the College Provost, Dr. Nura Muhammad Ringim, emphasized the institution’s commitment to producing qualified educators for the state and the nation.
He stated, “The college is equipped with the capacity and facilities needed to train students for quality degree qualifications that rival those of any institution in the country.”

Dr. Ringim commended the Jigawa State Government for its unwavering support, particularly in reviewing and increasing annual scholarship awards for students.
He also applauded the government’s role in securing approval for five additional degree programs from the Senate of Bayero University Kano.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor of BUK, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, Professor Salihu Lawan, Dean of Islamic Studies and Sharia, praised the college’s dedication and described it as a leading institution among those affiliated with BUK.

Earlier, the College Registrar, Malam Bala Isyaku, attributed the institution’s achievements to the support of Governor Umar Namadi and his administration. He highlighted the college’s contributions toward addressing the national challenge of unqualified teachers by producing competent graduates.

“Governor Namadi’s focus on education as a key agenda has propelled the sector forward, enabling us to consistently deliver quality education,” he stated, calling on stakeholders to collaborate with the college to further enhance its impact across educational and other human development sectors.

The event reaffirmed the institution’s resolve to maintain high academic standards and contribute significantly to improving the nation’s education system.

AFAN in Jigawa Condemns Fraudulent Practices Targeting Farmers

The Jigawa State Chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has raised concerns over the rising number of criminals impersonating the association and extorting money from farmers under the guise of registering them for agricultural support programs from both the Federal and State governments.

In a statement issued and signed by the state’s chairman, Engineer Auwal Garba Ibrahim, the association distanced itself from individuals or groups involved in the fraudulent activities across the state.

The statement reads, “It has come to our attention that certain unscrupulous individuals are falsely representing themselves as leaders or agents of AFAN, Jigawa State Chapter. These impostors have been approaching farmers, claiming they are entitled to collect fees or payments for services related to the ongoing agricultural programs initiated by the Federal Government and the Jigawa State government.”

The AFAN chairman clarified, “We want to make it clear that the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Jigawa State Chapter, does not charge farmers for any services or support programs provided by the Federal or State Governments or any organization.”

Engineer Auwal Garba Ibrahim strongly condemned the illegal activity, stating, “The syndicate involved in this extortion scheme are not legitimate representatives of our association in any capacity. We urge farmers and the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to local authorities and our office.”

He further assured the public that AFAN had launched an investigation into the matter and was working closely with law enforcement agencies to bring the culprits to justice.

The association urged farmers to only engage with legitimate officials through verified communication channels, including official phone numbers and email addresses, to avoid falling victim to such fraudulent activities.

The statement also acknowledged the efforts of Jigawa State Governor Malam Umar Namadi, commending his visits to distribution centers across the state and his commitment to a zero-tolerance stance on criminality.
The association reiterated its pledge to provide transparent and ethical assistance to farmers, free of charge, in support of the agricultural community’s needs.

Jigawa Government Signs Bond with 41,790 NG-CARES Beneficiaries for Proper Utilization of Support Facilities

The Jigawa State office of the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) has signed a bond with over 41,790 beneficiaries of the Fadama Programme, aimed at ensuring the proper utilization of the support facilities provided to them.
The State FADAMA CARES Coordinator, Dr. Aliyu Inuwa, made this announcement during the distribution of incubators to beneficiaries in Kafin Hausa Local Government Area.
He explained that the bond was designed to ensure that the resources provided to beneficiaries are used effectively, aligning with the goals of economic recovery and long-term sustainability.
“This agreement serves as a bond between the government and the beneficiaries. It ensures that resources are used effectively to meet the goals of economic recovery and sustainability,” Dr. Inuwa said.
He further revealed that the NG-CARES Results Area II initiative has benefited more than 47,790 individuals in Jigawa State, helping them recover from the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The coordinator expressed concerns over the initial misuse of some supported facilities and stressed the importance of proper management moving forward.
The support provided under NG-CARES includes various agricultural and economic facilities aimed at enhancing livelihoods.
Dr. Inuwa listed the beneficiaries of the program to include 3,360 Rice farmers, 2,210 Maize farmers, 4,330 Millet farmers, 3,650 Sorghum farmers, 1,660 Poultry farmers, 5,700 Goat breeders and 1,330
Sheep breeders.
Others are 710 units of Processing machines, 4,210 units Water pumps, 100 units Fingerlings, 1,280 units ofLocal chicks, 100 units of Agricultural equipment, 550 units of Spaghetti-making machines, 170 units ofDrilling machines, 270 units Incubators, 16,200 items of Food items and 270 units
Personal protective equipment.
Dr. Inuwa emphasized that the program’s success depends on the commitment of the beneficiaries to properly use the resources provided. He warned that any failure to adhere to the agreed guidelines would result in legal consequences.
“This initiative is not just about recovery; it’s about creating sustainable livelihoods for our people. Beneficiaries must adhere to the guidelines to ensure that the program achieves its objectives,” Dr. Inuwa concluded.
The signing of this bond marks a crucial step toward ensuring that the NG-CARES program in Jigawa State fulfills its intended goals, contributing to long-term economic resilience for its beneficiaries.
