Global NGO Okays Biafra’s self-determination, total independence
A global non-governmental body operating under the aegis of Organisation of Emerging African States, (OEAS) with interest in public charity has thrown its weight behind the self-determination struggle and clamour for total independence of the Republic of Biafra to be carved out from the Southern Eastern Nigeria.
The resolution of the Board of Directors of OEAS on the referendum dated 24th June, 2024 which was made available to the National Update in Abuja on Wednesday, indicated that the OEAS is basically a “public charity organisation with the mission of promoting positive change in Africa by supporting and strengthening grassroots initiatives for community, social justice and self-determination.”
To that extent, it said, “We accomplish that mission by shipping hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of clothing, necessities of life and medical supplies to West Africa each year and by supporting and advocating for the emerging states and peoples of Africa seeking freedom, liberty, and democracy.”
The resolution confirmed that Biafra became a charter member of the Organisation of Emerging African States in December, 2015, hence, they are calling on the Nigerian government to convene a referendum on Biafran self-determination within 90 days.
As a result of the charter status of Biafra, the OEAS said, it has called on the Nigerian government to hold referendum for purposes of total independence of Biafra before, saying: “In 2011 Biafra became a charter member of the Organization of Emerging African States (OEAS).
“In December 2015, OEAS called on the Nigerian government to hold a referendum on Biafran self-determination within 90 days including the option of the total
independence as the Republic of Biafra after a transitional phase of not more than 180
days.
“In 2016 OEAS repeated the call for referendum as the sponsor of the All Biafra Conference of Accra.
“In October 2020 OEAS repeated its demand for referendum on Biafran self-determination to the Nigerian government.
OEAS after deliberation has endorsed the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, Self Referendum on Biafra for the following reasons.”
The resolution which was issued by Dr Ebenezer Akwanga decried how the Nigerian became tight-fisted and refused to allow third party to conduct referendum, stressing that the move by Biafra was a global practices, thus, government should quickly allow a referendum.
The resolution further reads: “The African Charter of Human and Peoples Rights Guarantees the Right to Self Determination.
“Biafra has submitted a request to the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights to assist with the referendum and peaceable transfer of power to the Republic of Biafra, if so, indicated by the results.
“The OEAS is satisfied with the integrity of the referendum which is being conducted digitally and at local polling stations and is subject to multiple safeguards.
“The results of the referendum will be certifiable and will meet international standards.
6. Millions of Biafrans have already voted in the referendum which is due to be concluded November 29, 2024.”
