PANDEF admonishes Gov Okowa to ponder over querries raised by Clark rather than sink deeper

**gives him 48 hours to retract and withdraw his attacks on Chief Clark

The Pan Niger Delta Forum, (PANDEF) has admonished the governor of Delta State and the Vice Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ifeanyi Okowa to ponder over various troubling issues raised by the elder Stateman chief Edwin Clark in his open letter to him rather than deploying his media attack dogs.
The forum however, gave Governor Okowa, 48 hours to retract and withdraw his attacks on Chief Clark in his own interest.
The 96 year old leader of the group, had in an open letter accused the Governor of betraying his Southern Governor’s Forum by going behind to accept to be running mate to PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar against their earlier directives at their meeting in Asaba hosted by him.

A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of PANDEF Ken Robinson, advised Okowa on the need to be acquainted with an African proverb that says “when your father scolds you in the public, a well-brought up child, does not exchange words with him, but goes home to reflect on the words of the old man”.
He reminded okowa that “a child that is well brought up does not exchange words with his father when scolded in the public”.
“At nearly 96, Chief Senator (Chief) Dr. E.K. Clark, OFR, CON is not only our national leader and elder statesman, but, more significantly, is old enough to be a father and even grandfather to most of us.
“PANDEF, thus, finds it stunning that less than 24 hours after Chief Clark wrote an open letter to the governor, raising various troubling issues, he, Ifeanyi Okowa and his media attack dogs, have been quick to reply him; avoiding answers to the veracity of the issues raised, but dwelling on the towering image, integrity and personality of this great national icon.
The statement pointed out that Okowa was given an opportunity to redeem his soiled image, but rather than devoting time to conscientiously reflect on the issues raised in Chief’s letter and re-consider his ways; he has embarked on a futile campaign, through commissioned proxies, to disparage our leader, which could likened to one throwing pebbles into an ocean hoping to create ripples.
“As a regional body, that represents the interests of the people of the entire Niger Delta, PANDEF is compelled to note that the responses, on the matter, by Okowa’s Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, and other sycophantic liegemen, are thoughtless and disingenuous.
“It would even become more worrying if the invectives from the “attack dogs” signify Governor Okowa’s true inner reflections.

“Amongst other things, the Commissioner for Information, in particular, stated that Chief Clark, at his age, should be a unifier and not bent on dividing the country. That is not only fatuous but nonsensical.

“For the purpose of correcting Okowa’s messengers, and to set the records right, for future generations, it is necessary to remind Governor Okowa and his misguided aides of some facts.

“Without doubt, there is no other Nigerian, living or dead, who has played roles to unify this country like Chief E. K. Clark has done. For over 70 years, the respected national leader has continued to play overriding nationalistic roles, which was acknowledged, perhaps unintended, in the Commissioner’s response to Chief’s letter.
The statement went down memory lane, to indicate that following the end of the Nigerian civil war in 1970, as Commissioner for Education and later Finance, in the then Midwest State, Chief Clark initiated programmes, and with the approval of his governor, General Samuel Ogbemudia of blessed memory, went to then war-ravaged East Central State (now the entire South East zone) to rebuild schools, including the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

“He even withdrew his first daughter from the comfort of a secondary school in present Delta State and enrolled her at Queen’s School, Enugu, in solidarity with victims of the war.

“Chief Clark further initiated programmes that sent Science Teachers to the then North Western State and North Central State as well as Benue/Plateau State and the North Eastern State.
“It is on record that 250 primary and secondary school teachers were sent from Mid-West State to Kano State, during the administration of Governor Audu Bako, who was a Police Officer and the first Governor of Kano State after its creation.
“Another 200 teachers were sent to the North West State, which is now Sokoto State and others. Majority of those science teachers did not return to Midwest State, but remained in those States in the north and helped to build up their capacity.

“Beyond that, Chief Clark also arranged a student exchange programme between Midwest State and North Eastern State. If Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is in doubt, he should ask Mallam Adamu Adamu, the current Minister of Education, who was one of the several young persons that came from the North to the Midwest for their Higher School Certificate (HSC), at the time.

“Again, when Mid-West State established the New Nigeria Bank in 1972, with Chief Clark as Commissioner for Finance, the first branch of the bank outside the State was established in Jos, headquarters of the then Benue/Plateau State.

Likewise, when Chief Clark became Federal Commissioner (Minister) of Information during the regime of General Yakubu Gowon, it is well known to many Nigerians that he played a leading role in bringing national consciousness to General Gowon’s dictum of “no victor, no vanquished” and the three Rs; reconciliation, rehabilitation and reconstruction.

“Our National Leader, as Minister of Information, also introduced a programme, “Know Your Country”, and took journalists from different parts of Nigeria on a tour of the country, in order to get the journalists more aware of the compass and variety of Nigeria.
The statement reminded the governor that when he (Okowa) was seriously disadvantaged to become Governor of Delta State vis-à-vis other more qualified candidates, in Chief Clark’s belief for equity and fairness; he stood by him and helped him (Okowa) to become Governor of Delta State in 2015.

“Today, Governor Okowa could apprise Chief Clark, through his lackeys, that he should be a unifier. How men easily forget history. What a shame!

“Additionally, was it not Chief Clark, together with other patriotic leaders, that mobilized delegates from the South-South and other zones of the country, to support his principal, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, at the PDP Convention in Port Harcourt in 2018, which aided him to win the PDP Presidential ticket for the 2019 election?

“This was despite the fact that it was the same Atiku that led the marathon gang-up against our son, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, by championing the formation of the new PDP. Yet Chief Clark stood for him few years later. Is that a man that does not unify?

“It is significant to recall that leading to the 2019 general elections, the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum led by Chief Clark and the Northern Elders Forum led by Professor Ango Abdullahi held several meetings, to promote unity, peace and a more egalitarian Nigeria.
“Chief Clark and Professor Ango Abdullahi Co-chaired those meetings, and the decision to support former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, arose from those meetings; after interacting with several other Northern presidential aspirants. It is, therefore, most unfortunate that Governor Okowa would accused Chief Edwin Clark of dividing the nation.

“It is equally important to underscore the fact that our father, based on his well-known stance on accountability, transparency and good governance, also raised the issue of monies accruing to Delta State from the 13% derivation in his letter to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

“Our least expectation was that His Excellency would provide answers to the questions posed. Because the funds that come to Delta State are for the people of Delta State, thus, the demand for accountability and transparency must not be trivialized or ignored, but should be answered correctly, especially for a man who dreams to become the vice president of Nigeria.

“Governor Okowa should also note the other critical issues cited in our father’s letter to him, including the question of how he emerged as Vice Presidential candidate to the PDP presidential flag bearer, former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

“Doesn’t Governor Okowa’s conscience prick him? He hosted the momentous meeting of the 17 Southern Governors in Asaba on Tuesday, 11th May 2021 and provided the Secretariat, which produced the Communiqué putting forward the far-reaching declaration on power rotation; which was applauded by many, including people from the north, who consider that in the “spirit of give and take”, the presidency ought to revert to the South in 2023.
“Thereafter, Governor Okowa joined his colleagues to meet again in Lagos on 5th July, 2021 and in Enugu on 16th September 2021, where they restated their position on power shift.

“In between those meetings, the Southern Nigeria and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum, which is being led by our father, followed up and met severally in Abuja, and re-echoed the position of Governor Okowa and his colleagues.”

The statement indicated that PANDEF holds no grudge against Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as the Constitution of Nigeria allows him, and indeed any other Nigeria, to aspire and to hold any political views that he feels convinced about.
“However, it is required that those who aspire to high leadership positions must be above board in conduct.
“Governor Ifeanyi Okowa will, undoubtedly, go down in history as a man who led his people to take a stance on a fundamental issue, touching on the very fabric of Nigeria’s corporate existence, but later, surreptitiously, turned round to do otherwise.”

2023 polls: Abdulsalami Peace Committee opens up on pressure to ask for cancellation

The National Peace Committee (NPC) has opened up on pressure it faced to intervene in the 2023 Presidential Election results. During a report presentation in Abuja, led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the committee disclosed that it received numerous requests to push the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to halt results collation or cancel the election due to alleged violations of the electoral act.

Key issues included concerns about the 25% vote threshold requirement for the Federal Capital Territory, with some advocates calling for a runoff.

The NPC emphasized its role as a moral authority rather than a regulatory body, highlighting its mandate to promote peace and compliance with the law, without the power to arrest or punish violators.
The committee acknowledged a gap in public understanding of its functions and the importance of moral persuasion in fostering electoral integrity and peace.

Before presenting the report to the public, the committee had earlier met with the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and other management staff of the commission where it was briefed on the electoral umpire’s preparation for the forthcoming Governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.

Other members of the committee are Okoh Ebitu Ukiwe (Vice Chairman); Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah (Convener); Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III; John Cardinal Onaiyekan; business icons, Aliko Dangote and Femi Otedola; Vanguard Newspapers Publisher, Sam Amuka Pemu; Ameze Guobadia; Idayat Hassan; Dame Priscilla Kuye; Gen. Martin Luther Agwai; Mahmud Yayale Ahmed; Channels TV owner, John Momoh; Roseline Ukeje; and, Fr. Atta Barkindo, its Head of Secretariat.

Part of the report reads; “As the election day progressed, criticisms and counter criticisms became abundant. The NPC was already being faced with a flurry of phone calls and the need to call INEC to order.

“The Peace Committee was flooded with requests for intervention. Both the Chairman of the Committee, General Abdulsalami A. Abubakar, the Convener, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and the Head of NPC Secretariat, Fr. Atta Barkindo, were inundated with calls, requests, and petitions demanding the intervention of the NPC.

“Some of the requests wanted the NPC to prevail on INEC to stop collating election results because there were gross violations and lack of compliance with the electoral act. Others demanded that the tenets of the Peace Accord signed were not adhered to and therefore the Committee should call for cancellation of the election entirely.

“The most significant call was related to the 25% threshold for Abuja as the Federal Capital Territory. Some of the analysts who reached out to the committee asked that the final election result should not be announced because the resumptive president-elect did not score the required 25% as stated in the electoral act. If anything, there should be a runoff.

EU reports: LP says FG is feebly adopting face saving measures

***EU only hit the nail on the head

The leadership of the Labour Party has countered the Federal Government of Nigeria for discrediting the European Union’s conclusion on the 2023 General Election wherein it faulted the modalities by which the conclusion was reached.
It reiterated what it believed as the accurate testament of the European Union’s conclusion on the 2023 general elections which merely hit the nail on the head.
A statement by the National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh said,
“Eropean Union’s Conclusion on the 2023 general elections are nit Jaundiced but accurate Testament of the outcome of the FG and INEC alliance to change the will of the electorate.”
“We see this face-saving measure by the Federal Government which is coming days after the submission of the report as feeble and medicine after death.

“It will interest the government to note that the European Union’s report is only one out of numerous submissions by other international Observers who have described the outcome of the election as a sham and an exercise that did not reflect the will of the majority of Nigerians.

“Labour Party stands by the position of the EU observation mission. We have always said that this election was massively rigged in favour of the APC and their candidate.
“What the FG is saying is just an afterthought and a shameless effort to mask the obvious. Even the blind can see, the deaf can hear and they know this election was manipulated.
“Huge pieces of evidence abound for even the deaf and the blind to hear and feel. We are only hoping that the judiciary will dispense justice without fear or favour in the interest of the nation and posterity.
“Nigerians already know the true winner of the 2023 presidential election and no amount of slandering, denial, or rebuttal can change the fact that the party in power has no mandate of the electorate.

“We must also note that whatever position the INEC has taken is with active connivance with the Federal Government to deny the electorate and it clearly shows that INEC is not in any way independent.
“The Commission’s action is at the whims and caprices of the government and we know it. But Nigerians looking to the Judiciary for justice. That’s where we stand.”

FG tackles EU over report on 2023 general elections

The Federal Government has countered the European Union’s report on the 2023 general elections, describing the conclusions therein as “jaundiced”.
The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy gave the indication in a statement on Sunday.

“We urge the EU and other foreign interests to be objective in all their assessments of the internal affairs of our country and allow Nigeria to breathe,”
According to him, the February 25, 2023 presidential election was “clearly and fairly” won by Tinubu, the then candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC).

He also advised that the EU allow Nigeria to breathe and not meddle in the affairs of the country.

“We find it preposterous and unconscionable that in this day and age, any foreign organisation of whatever hue can continue to insist on its own yardstick and assessment as the only way to determine the credibility and transparency of our elections,” he said.

He said the presidency was not unaware of the “machinations of the European Union to sustain its, largely, unfounded bias and claims on the election outcomes”.

Alake further stated that there is no substantial evidence provided by the EU or any foreign and local organisation that is viable enough to impeach the integrity of the 2023 election outcomes.

“We would like to know and even ask EU, how it reached the conclusions in the submitted final report with the very limited coverage of the elections by their observers who, without doubt, relied more on rumours, hearsay, cocktails of prejudiced and uninformed social media commentaries and opposition talking heads,” he stated.

“We have many reasons to believe the jaundiced report, based on the views of fewer than 50 observers, was to merely sustain the same premature denunciatory stance contained in EU’s preliminary report released in March.

“We strongly reject, in its entirety, any notion and idea from any organisation, group and individual remotely suggesting that the 2023 election was fraudulent.”

The media aide said Nigeria has put the elections behind, and Tinubu is facing the task of nation-building.

“As a country, we have put the elections behind us. President Tinubu is facing the arduous task of nation-building, while those who have reasons to challenge the process continue to do so through the courts.”

On June 27, 2023, the EU presented its report on the 2023 elections in Nigeria to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The EU said the election exposed enduring systemic weaknesses and therefore signaled a need for further legal and operational reforms to enhance transparency, inclusiveness and accountability.

The EU also identified six areas for improvement in Nigeria’s electoral process moving forward.

Some of the key areas listed by the Mission are ambiguities in the law, the establishment of a publicly accountable process for the selection of the INEC members, ensuring real-time publication of results as well as access to election results.

It also highlighted the need for protection for media practitioners while decrying the discrimination against women in elective and appointed positions as well as impunity regarding electoral offences.
