The spokesperson of the Labour Party presidential campaign council, Dr Yunusa Tanko on Saturday celebrated his 51st birthday anniversary with widows in Benue State.
Tanko in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday explained that he deliberately chose to celebrate with Benue widows because he was a product of widowhood and he wanted to use Benue widows as a point of connection with all the windows in Nigeria.
Addressing the women at Benue Hotels and Resort, Makurdi, Dr Tanko asserted that women take care of children better than men, recounting that his mother Aisha Yunusa, became a widow when he, Tanko, was just in form 3 but she did her best to train him in school.
Tanko who lamented that women are becoming widows in Nigeria on daily basis owing to the prevailing insecurity said, the plight of widows in the country was enormous considering the level of marginalization and dehumanization meted out to them by men.
He urged politicians aspiring for leadership positions to take adequate care of women rather than use them for political gains, averring that “whoever wants to become the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a product of the Nigerian woman”.
Dr Tanko charged women to think deeply and look out for those who can do things for them, assuring that he will continue to create enabling environment for widows to do businesses, earn a living with dignity and take care of their children so that if another man comes to marry them, he will not feel he is doing them a favour.
In his remarks, Chief host of the occasion, Adamu Hassan Nalaraba, commended Dr Yunusa Tanko for creating time out of his busy schedule to celebrate his birthday with widows in Benue all the way from Kano.
