Responding to the global Cholera outbreak, a non Governmental organisation, Save the Children International (SCI) has strengthened it’s apparatus to contain the outbreak in Jigawa state.
According to a statement by SCI Communication Officer, Haruna Ibrahim on Wednesday, the support included the training of health workers, supply of medical instructions and consumables.
The statement said this was in addition to the training of LGAs response teams as well as community mobilizers.
It listed the measures to include sensitisation of communities about cholera, distribution of non food items to households, environmental sanitation and water purification activities respectively.
“SCI is supporting Jigawa state government through the ministry of health to respond to cholera outbreak in 10 LGAs that included Sule Tankarkar, Kiri Kasamma, Auyo, Babura, Birniwa, Gumel, Mai gatari, Taura, Kafin Hausa and Miga”, it stressed.
“Our goal is to ensure the outbreak is controlled to prevent deaths, provide access to treatment of infected persons and strengthen capacity of community structures for prevention, early preparedness and mitigation of future outbreaks”, it added.
In response to such call, the Akasan community in Taura LGA has organized a sanitation for all it’s members to curb the menace in the surroundings supported by SCI.
Speaking to news men during the sanitation campaign, SCI enumerator in the area Ibrahim Muhammad Dankawu said the sanitation campaign would help in reducing cholera outbreak and other child killer diseases.
Also, the traditional leader of Akasan community, Malam Arma Ya’u Muhammad, commended Save the Children for supporting the sanitation campaign.
Although he confirmed the outbreak of the cholera in last two months in the area with over 50 people affected by the outbreak, but he said it was contained with no lost of lives.
