Following the directive to 46 regional managers to proceed on compulsory retirement by the Interim Management of Abuja Electricity Distribution company (AEDC), employees of the AEDC have been told to down tools indefinitely.
The directive is at the instance of the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC).
A statement on Sunday by the SSAEAC states as follows: “Following the directive to all the General Managers (GMs) to proceed on compulsory retirement without following the due process, an action the union view as highly tyrannical and an attempt to commence the gradual downsizing of workers by style, the union is left with no option than to commence picketing of AEDC offices within the franchise including Corporate Headquarters effective from Monday, 24th January, 2022, until the action is reversed.
This is the directive from national body of the union. All members are expected to be on union T-shirt and converge at the Corporate Headquarters by 6am tomorrow”.
It will be recalled that the new interim management of the AEDC last Friday sacked 46 regional managers in what appeared to be a major reform after it took over a month ago.
The affected top officials of the DisCo were suspended.
However, updated information shows that they were asked to proceed on compulsory retirement.
