The Organisation for Community Civic Engagement of Nigeria (OCCEN) and National Endowment for Democracy have urged Nigerian youths and women to participate in politics and vie for elective positions in 2023 general elections.

The two organizations made the call during a panel discussion for inspiring the aspiring young politicians in Jigawa state, held at the Manpower Development Institute (MDI) in Dutse the state capital.

The executive director of OCCEN Comrade Abdurrazaq Alkali said “It is the right time for the Youths and women to fully come out to participate in politics and contest for elective positions as they are the majority when it comes to population”.

According to him, youths also are engines of development as well as the back bones of any community, therefore he said there is need for their inclusion in politics for a vibrant and better leadership in Jigawa and the country at large.

The director, said more than 70 percent of registered voters are youths while about 42 percent are women yet the youths and women are left out when it comes to allocation of political offices in Nigeria.

“OCCEN with support from National Endowment for Democracy realized the gaps of inadequate recognition of youths and women in politics.
“We therefore decided to embarked on massive sensitization for enlightenment of the youths to know their roles in politics for better participation” Alqali said.

He urged the participants to share the knowledge acquired during the discussion with their colleagues at the grassroots level for better participation in politics.

While making his remarks, one of the panel discussants Dr Mu’azu Abdullahi commended OCCEN for organising the event adding that youths have a better role to play in politics for better Nigeria.

Abuse of Power: Hosting APC Events at the Presidential Villa

Published

Peter Ameh

The recent decision to host the APC National Caucus meeting at the Presidential Villa has ignited a fierce debate, with critics accusing the ruling party of misusing state resources for political gain. The Presidential Villa, traditionally seen as a symbol of national unity and a space for all Nigerians, has now become the center of controversy.

Political analysts and opposition groups argue that using the Villa for partisan activities violates the core principles of democracy and fairness.
“The Presidential Villa is not the property of any single political party. It belongs to all Nigerians,” said Peter Ameh of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP). “The ruling party is essentially turning state resources into its own political tool, which creates an unfair advantage and undermines the democratic process.”

Beyond concerns about fairness, critics also warn that such actions set a dangerous precedent.
By using the Presidential Villa as a venue for APC events, the government risks politicizing state institutions and weakening the separation of powers. This, they argue, could have long-lasting consequences for the stability of Nigeria’s democracy.

At a time when the country faces mounting challenges—ranging from poverty and insecurity to corruption—many Nigerians feel the ruling party’s focus on consolidating political power at the expense of national welfare is both troubling and inappropriate.

“The Nigerian people deserve more than a government that prioritizes political maneuvering over the urgent issues facing the country,” Ameh concluded.

As the controversy rages, the question remains: will the ruling party respect the neutrality of state institutions, or will this growing trend of political partisanship further erode the foundations of Nigerian democracy?

Abdullahi Abbas

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Abdullahi Abbas, has publicly disowned the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, declaring that he is not a member of the party.
Abbas made this statement while reacting to Ata’s recent criticism of him during a BBC Hausa interview, where the minister warned that he and his supporters would leave the APC if Abbas or anyone like him was reinstated as the party’s chairman in Kano.
In response, Abbas accused Ata of working against the APC during the 2023 elections, stating that they had reported his alleged anti-party activities to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“To us APC members, Yusuf Ata is not a member of the APC. We don’t even know why he was appointed a minister,” Abbas said. “In the entire Kano State, it was only in his local government that we came third during the election.”
The statement is a highlight of growing tensions within the Kano APC, as party leadership continues to challenge Ata’s loyalty and legitimacy within its ranks.

Kawu Sumaila

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano has taken decisive disciplinary action against several of its members, including a senator and other legislators, over alleged anti-party activities.
Addressing journalists in Kano on Monday, the NNPP State Chairman, Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, announced that the affected lawmakers include Senator Kawu Sumaila (Kano South), Alhaji Abdullahi Sani Rogo (Rogo Federal Constituency), Alhaji Abdullahi Rurum (Rano/Kibiya), and Ali Maadakin Gini (Dala Federal Constituency).
Dungurawa expressed the party’s disappointment, stating that despite receiving complementary tickets during the party’s primaries, these legislators had allegedly worked against NNPP’s interests, principles, and values.
“The party is deeply concerned about the conduct of some National Assembly members who were elected under our platform but have chosen to betray the trust placed in them,” he stated.
The NNPP’s latest move signals a firm stance against internal disloyalty as the party seeks to maintain discipline within its ranks.
