Bashir Tofa dies in Kano after protracted illness

The former Presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) in the annulled June 12, 1993 ; election, Bashir Othman Tofa is dead.

Family sources confirmed that the 74-year-old Elder Statesman died in the early hours of Monday after a protracted illness 

Tofa was the challenger of late MKO Abiola, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, in the controversial June 12 election that was annulled by the regime of Military President, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida. 

One of the deceased’s relations, Alhaji Muhammad who confirmed the sad news said “Alhaji Bashir Tofa died after being admitted in Hospital for some time”

Born to a Kanuri family on June 20, 1947, the’ late politician, who hailed from Kano State, was also a businessman, an oil trader and industrialist. He was chairman of International Petro-Energy Company (IPEC) and Abba Othman and Sons Limited with involvement as a board member in Impex Ventures, Century Merchant Bank, and General Metal Products Ltd.
