The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State has closed ranks ahead of the 2027 governorship election, unanimously adopting Mustapha Sule Lamido as its governorship candidate through a consensus process that underscored growing internal unity within the party.
Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, emerged unopposed during the party’s governorship primaries after delegates from all 27 local government areas endorsed his candidacy through a voice vote supervised by the party’s electoral committee.
Announcing the outcome, Chairman of the Electoral Committee sent by the PDP national headquarters, Barrister Isah Ahmed, declared that Lamido emerged without opposition as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 election.
According to him, the affirmation followed broad consultations and agreement among party stakeholders across the state, culminating in what party leaders described as a peaceful and coordinated exercise.
The Jigawa State PDP Chairman, Babandi Ibrahim, congratulated Lamido, party members, and supporters for conducting what he termed a hitch-free and successful primary election, praising the atmosphere of unity that characterised the process.
Lamido’s emergence is being viewed within the party as a strategic move to consolidate the PDP ahead of what is expected to be an intense political contest in 2027.
In his acceptance speech, the PDP flag bearer said his return to the governorship race was driven by the need to confront worsening hardship and governance challenges facing the state.
He argued that many of the issues raised during the 2023 campaign remain unresolved, insisting that the party was returning with renewed determination and a clearer mission.
“We are back in the race today because the problems and challenges bedevilling our dear state are still with us,” he said, citing hardship, governance failures, and declining public confidence in leadership.
Lamido pledged to focus on youth empowerment, economic growth, healthcare delivery, education reform, and institutional rebuilding if elected governor.
“We are not here to lament, we are here to fix it,” he declared, while promising accountable leadership and improved governance across the state.
He also urged party supporters to remain united and disciplined ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that victory would require collective commitment rather than personal ambition.
“To the people of Jigawa: I hear you, I see you, and I feel your pain. Give me the opportunity to serve you,” he added.
The consensus endorsement now positions Lamido as the PDP’s frontline contender in the race for the Jigawa Government House as political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
