Nigeria has lost one of its distinguished statesmen and scholars, Professor Jibril Aminu, who passed away on Wednesday in Abuja at the age of 85 after a prolonged illness.
Professor Aminu was a renowned cardiologist, diplomat, academic, and politician whose career spanned medicine, international relations, and public service.
He served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2003, before being elected to the Senate, where he represented Adamawa Central Senatorial District from 2003 to 2011.
A graduate of the University of Ibadan, where he obtained his first medical degree in 1965, Professor Aminu went on to earn a PhD in Medicine from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London, in 1972.
Beyond his academic and political achievements, Professor Aminu was widely respected for his intellect, humility, and dedication to national service.
He is survived by two wives and nine children.
Burial arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
