The Kogi State House of Assembly has called on the Federal Government and the Kogi State Government to urgently strengthen security interventions to curb the rising wave of bandit attacks and violent killings in Oganenigu communities, Dekina Local Government Area.
The lawmakers also appealed for the establishment of a permanent Nigerian Army base in Oganenigu Ward, describing it as a critical step toward restoring lasting peace, boosting security presence, and encouraging displaced residents to return to their ancestral homes. They further called for expanded rehabilitation support for victims of the attacks.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion moved at plenary by Hon. Ochidi Usman Shehu (APC, Dekina/Biraidu), who raised concerns over repeated attacks in the area, which have led to loss of lives, destruction of property, and large-scale displacement of residents over time.
Hon. Ochidi condemned the persistent insecurity in Oganenigu, noting that the communities have suffered repeated assaults from armed groups, leaving many families in distress and forcing others to abandon their homes.
However, he commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his swift response and proactive measures in addressing insecurity across the state, particularly in the recent attacks in Oganenigu Ward.
In his ruling, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf, also praised Governor Ododo’s commitment to tackling insecurity, describing his interventions as timely and proactive in several affected areas of the state.
The Speaker reaffirmed that restoring peace and security remains a top priority for the legislature, assuring that the Assembly would continue to support all efforts aimed at protecting lives and property across Kogi State.
Following an overwhelming voice vote in support of the motion, the House adopted all prayers, including the call for a permanent military presence in Oganenigu Ward.
The Speaker thereafter directed the Clerk of the House, Alhaji Ahmed Chogudo, to forward the resolution to the relevant authorities for immediate consideration and action.
