A political storm is brewing as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demands answers from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over explosive allegations that senior officials received land and cash gifts from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The opposition party warned that the controversy, if left unresolved, could strike at the very heart of Nigeria’s electoral integrity.
Describing the allegations as “disturbing and dangerous,” the PDP said reports suggesting that electoral officials benefited from Abuja land allocations point to a possible compromise of the nation’s electoral umpire.
“This raises grave concerns of a ‘land-for-favour’ arrangement,” the party declared.
Even more troubling, the PDP noted, is that one senior official was reportedly linked to the alleged benefit—fueling fears that the crisis could run deep within the commission.
The party cautioned that public confidence in INEC—already under scrutiny—could further collapse if transparency is not urgently provided.
Amid the political firestorm, Wike has taken decisive action following the collapse of a multi-storey building in Abuja.
In a dramatic on-site inspection, the minister ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of the developer, accusing them of defying multiple stop-work orders and flouting regulatory approvals.
Though no fatalities were recorded, several victims were injured—an outcome Wike said could have been far worse.
Declaring zero tolerance for negligence, he warned that illegal constructions would face the full weight of the law. The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has since seized the property, signaling a hardline stance on public safety.

Still under intense scrutiny, Wike also confronted backlash over his controversial “shooting at journalists” remark, insisting it was figurative—not literal.
During a meeting with DAAR Communications executives, the minister pushed back, accusing sections of the media of distorting his words.
He warned that inaccurate reporting could inflame tensions and mislead the public, urging journalists to uphold professionalism in an already charged political climate.
