The Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, has urged Nigerians to embrace unity, tolerance, and a renewed commitment to national development as the country celebrates Eid al-Fitr.
In a goodwill message marking the end of Ramadan, Bamidele congratulated Muslim faithful across the country for successfully observing the holy month, describing it as a period of spiritual reflection, sacrifice, and renewal that should inspire positive values in society.
He noted that the celebration comes at a sensitive moment, pointing to recent security challenges, including attacks in Maiduguri, and emphasized the need for stronger, more coordinated national responses to insecurity.
While commending the efforts of Nigeria’s security agencies, the Senate Leader stressed that military operations alone are insufficient to address the nation’s security concerns.
He called for a holistic strategy that combines security measures with sustained investments in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, aimed at addressing the root causes of violence and instability.
According to him, achieving lasting peace will require collective effort from all stakeholders, including government institutions, community leaders, religious bodies, and citizens.
Bamidele also urged religious leaders to continue promoting messages of peace, tolerance, and moderation, warning against narratives that could foster extremism or deepen divisions.
He further encouraged socio-cultural leaders to prioritize dialogue and peaceful engagement in resolving ethnic and communal disputes across the country.
Highlighting legislative interventions, Bamidele disclosed that the National Assembly is actively pursuing reforms designed to strengthen governance and enhance national security architecture.
He referenced the Senate’s Ad-hoc Committee on National Security Summit, tasked with identifying the root causes of insecurity and proposing practical, long-term solutions.
He also pointed to the ongoing constitutional review process, noting that proposed amendments are aimed at expanding the role of subnational governments in maintaining security within their respective domains.
Reaffirming the commitment of the legislature to national stability and development, the Senate Leader said the National Assembly remains focused on enacting laws that will complement executive actions in addressing insecurity.
He concluded by wishing Nigerians a peaceful and joyful Eid celebration, urging citizens to uphold the values of Ramadan—discipline, compassion, and unity—in their daily lives.
