Malami Breaks Silence After Release, Says He Has ‘No Regrets’

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has declared he has no regrets over decisions taken during his time in office, following his release from detention over alleged financial crimes.
Malami spoke shortly after regaining freedom from custody, where he had been held in connection with multiple charges, including alleged money laundering brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The former minister, who was detained at facilities including Kuje Prison and also held by the Department of State Services, described his ordeal as part of “God’s will,” maintaining that he remains innocent of all allegations.
“I have no regrets regarding what I did during my time as a minister,” he said, adding that he would vigorously defend himself in court.
16-Count Charges, Not Guilty Plea
Malami, alongside members of his family, is facing a 16-count charge bordering on alleged financial crimes. He and the co-defendants have all pleaded not guilty, setting the stage for what is expected to be a closely watched legal battle.
Despite the weight of the allegations, the former minister struck a defiant tone, insisting that his record in office remains intact.
Allegations Against Security Agencies
In a twist, Malami also accused security agencies of rights violations during the course of the investigation. He alleged that operatives conducted searches of his residences and business premises without prior notice or his presence.
The claims add another layer of controversy to an already high-profile case involving one of Nigeria’s most prominent former public officials.
Debate Over Accountability Rekindled
The development is expected to reignite national conversations around accountability, due process, and the legacy of public office holders in Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight.
Observers say the outcome of the case could have far-reaching implications for governance and public trust, as scrutiny intensifies over actions taken by officials while in power.
For now, Malami appears resolute.
His message is clear: despite the legal storm, he stands by his decisions—and is prepared to fight to clear his name.
