The Kano State Government has approved the participation of Muhammadu Sanusi II as leader of this year’s Sallah Durbar, despite the lingering emirship dispute in Kano.
The decision, sanctioned by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, comes amid heightened concerns over possible unrest during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, following intelligence reports indicating potential attempts to disrupt public peace.
Authorities confirmed that the traditional Hawan Idi procession will proceed under Sanusi’s leadership, beginning from the Kofar Mata Eid Ground and moving through designated routes before concluding at the emir’s palace. However, in a significant departure from tradition, several key aspects of the centuries-old Durbar have been scaled down.
Officials announced that the Hawan Nasarawa procession will hold in a restricted format without the usual horseback displays, while other major events—including Hawan Daushe, Hawan Fanisau, and Hawan Dorayi—have been suspended entirely in the interest of public safety.
The government said the adjustments are part of broader efforts to prevent any breakdown of law and order, stressing that security agencies have been placed on high alert to monitor activities before, during, and after the festivities.
Residents were also urged to remain law-abiding and avoid spreading misinformation that could inflame tensions, as authorities reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring a peaceful celebration.
The Durbar, a historic cultural spectacle in Kano, has been overshadowed by the ongoing dispute between Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero over the emirship throne. While the state government reinstated Sanusi in 2024, Bayero continues to challenge the decision in court.
Despite the unresolved legal battle, the government expressed confidence that the situation will be resolved, even as it moves ahead with plans to preserve the state’s cultural heritage under tight security arrangements.
