In the politics of grassroots representation and community development in Jigawa State, few political figures have built a profile as enduring as that of Hon. (Engr.) Magaji Da’u Aliyu, PhD mni.
A qualified engineer, former federal lawmaker, philanthropist and grassroots politician from Birnin Kudu, Magaji Da’u Aliyu has spent years building relationships with communities and supporting programmes focused on infrastructure, education, employment and humanitarian assistance.
For those who may not have had the opportunity to interact with him, his political journey offers an interesting picture of a politician whose influence, according to his supporters, extends beyond the period he spent in elective office.
A Long Record of Legislative Representation
Magaji Da’u Aliyu is a former member of the House of Representatives, where he represented the Birnin Kudu/Buji Federal Constituency.
During his time in the National Assembly, he served as Chairman of the House Committee on Power and Mines, a position that placed him in a strategic role in legislative activities relating to two important sectors of the Nigerian economy.
Since the return of democratic rule in 1999, he has remained one of the longest-serving representatives of the constituency, having served for more than two terms.
For his supporters, his repeated electoral victories were an indication of the confidence constituents placed in his representation.
Infrastructure and Community Development
Infrastructure was one of the areas associated with his representation.
During his tenure, several communities within the constituency were connected to the national electricity grid. Feeder roads were constructed in different communities, while solar-powered water projects and numerous hand-pump boreholes were also provided.
For residents in rural communities, such interventions were particularly significant because they addressed basic needs such as electricity, access roads and potable water.
Education and Human Capital Development
Beyond physical infrastructure, human capital development featured prominently in programmes attributed to Magaji Da’u Aliyu.
According to accounts from his supporters, he facilitated employment opportunities for thousands of young people in various ministries, departments and agencies, as well as in the private sector.
Some constituents also gained opportunities to join the military and paramilitary services.
His educational interventions and scholarship programmes similarly supported students from Birnin Kudu and Buji Local Government Areas.
Beneficiaries have reportedly pursued studies in universities, colleges and other institutions, including medical and nursing training institutions.
He also supported vocational and skills-acquisition programmes for women and young people, particularly those with limited access to formal education.
Economic empowerment was another area of intervention, with constituents receiving financial assistance, business capital and materials to establish or expand small businesses.
Maintaining a Grassroots Connection
Politics, in the case of Magaji Da’u Aliyu, has also been about maintaining close contact with constituents.
His supporters say party members across polling units, wards and local government areas have benefited from his assistance.
Such support, they maintain, has not always been limited to political activities. It has extended to periods of religious celebrations, marriages, childbirth, bereavements and other personal emergencies.
Whether viewed as traditional grassroots politics or as a model of constituency engagement, the approach has helped him maintain a network of supporters across Birnin Kudu and Buji.
Service Beyond Elective Office
Perhaps one of the more notable aspects of his political profile is the claim by his supporters that his interventions continued after he left the National Assembly.
Outside elective office, he has reportedly remained involved in initiatives targeting education, youth empowerment and employment.
In one recent intervention, he reportedly sponsored 42 orphans and children from less-privileged backgrounds, most of them girls, to study at a private College of Nursing Sciences.
He also reportedly facilitated employment for 20 people in a power company and supported the recruitment of more than 40 youths into the Nigeria Police Force.
For his supporters, these interventions demonstrate a philosophy that political influence should translate into practical opportunities for members of the community.
Political Appointments and Recognition
His political experience has also been reflected in appointments within the current administration.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed him Director-General of the Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO), while he was also appointed Deputy Director-General (North) of the Tinubu Support Group.
He has served in various capacities within the All Progressives Congress (APC), including responsibilities connected with National Assembly primary elections.
For his supporters, these appointments demonstrate the recognition of his political experience, organisational capacity and grassroots network.
Beyond the Politics of Yesterday
The larger question, however, is what Magaji Da’u Aliyu’s experience means for the future of Birnin Kudu/Buji Federal Constituency.
Those advocating for his return argue that the constituency needs representation that combines legislative experience with infrastructure development, education, employment, empowerment and direct engagement with constituents.
They believe his previous experience provides him with an understanding of the challenges facing the constituency and the political connections required to pursue solutions.
But politics, ultimately, belongs to the people.
The electorate will determine whether past experience remains relevant to the challenges of the present and whether the record attributed to Magaji Da’u Aliyu merits another opportunity to serve.
For the people of Birnin Kudu and Buji, the debate over his legacy is therefore likely to remain part of the wider conversation about the kind of leadership and representation they want in the years ahead.
As the popular saying goes, one good turn deserves another.
