Davido Fires Back at Okpebholo, Says ‘I Won’t Apologise’ Over WAEC Result

Governor Monday Okpebholo[/caption]Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has rejected calls to apologise to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo over his decision to publish what he described as the governor’s WAEC result.

Davido, speaking in an exclusive interview with News Central on Tuesday in Osun State, insisted that he had done nothing wrong and was only drawing public attention to the academic record of the Edo governor.

“I’m not going to apologise. I didn’t do anything wrong,” the singer said.

The controversy erupted after Okpebholo travelled to Osun State during the governorship campaign and took a swipe at Governor Ademola Adeleke, mocking him over his penchance for dancing and questioning his seriousness as a leader.

Davido, who is Adeleke’s nephew and has openly backed his uncle politically, responded by posting an alleged copy of Okpebholo’s WAEC result on his Instagram Story.

The post triggered a fresh round of political and social media exchanges, with critics accusing the singer of crossing the line by bringing the governor’s academic record into the political contest.

Davido, however, appeared unapologetic, arguing that Okpebholo had no business leaving Edo State to attack his uncle in Osun.

He also questioned the circumstances surrounding Okpebholo’s electoral victory, alleging that the governor was “selected” rather than elected.

The singer further took a swipe at the governor over his reported stay in a hotel, while warning that the political exchange would not end with the Osun election.

“In fact, finish your three years, we’ll visit you when it’s time for you to get re-elected,” Davido said.

The singer also said he felt sorry for Okpebholo’s children, arguing that the governor’s public attacks on a sitting colleague had dragged their families into a political confrontation.

Davido’s position followed an appeal by an Osun-based commentator, Tugbiyele, who urged him to apologise to Okpebholo.

Tugbiyele described the publication of the alleged WAEC result as inappropriate, arguing that even if the result was genuine, it should not have been used to ridicule a sitting governor.

He also suggested that Adeleke should have responded to Okpebholo through official political channels rather than allowing Davido to engage the Edo governor.

But Davido’s latest comments suggest that the feud between the two camps is far from over, with the singer making it clear that he does not intend to withdraw his response to Okpebholo.

The clash has added a celebrity dimension to the political battle that surrounded the Osun governorship election, as personal attacks, family ties and partisan loyalties increasingly became part of the campaign conversation.
