Suspected terrorists have abducted a Catholic priest and 10 other persons and killed three residents during a fresh attack on Karku community in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Kafanchan confirmed the abduction of the priest, Reverend Father Nathaniel Asuwaye, describing the incident as a tragic blow to the community.
According to the Church, the attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday when gunmen stormed the area and invaded the residence of the priest. Residents said the assailants operated for several minutes, abducting their victims before fleeing.
In a statement signed by the Diocesan Chancellor, Very Reverend Father Jacob Shanet, the Archdiocese expressed deep concern over the development and called for prayers for the safe release of those abducted.
“With deep sorrow, we announce the kidnapping of our priest, Rev. Fr. Nathaniel Asuwaye, the parish priest of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Karku, alongside 10 other persons,” the statement said.
Sources at the Kaduna State Police Command confirmed that security agencies have launched a coordinated manhunt for the attackers and deployed operatives to the Kauru axis to prevent further violence.
The incident has heightened fears among residents of southern Kaduna communities, which have continued to witness attacks despite ongoing security operations. Local leaders have renewed calls for stronger protection of rural communities and religious institutions across the area.
