The Kano State Government has assured residents that the longstanding emirship dispute in the state will soon be resolved, as efforts continue to restore peace, stability, and unity.
The assurance was given on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, while briefing journalists in Kano. He said the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has already taken concrete steps to address the crisis.
“The Kano emirship tussle will soon be resolved amicably because the state government is committed to dialogue with all stakeholders,” Waiya said, emphasizing that the administration’s approach is guided by respect for the rule of law, traditional institutions, and the collective interest of Kano residents.
He noted that traditional institutions play a critical role in promoting peace, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering social cohesion, adding that the government would not take any action that could undermine the sanctity of the emirate system.
The emirship crisis intensified in May 2024 when Muhammadu Sanusi II was reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano, following the removal of Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th emir. This followed Governor Yusuf’s signing of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024, which repealed the 2019 law and dissolved additional emirate councils created by the previous administration.
Since then, the issue has generated legal battles, political tensions, and public debate, raising concerns about peace and stability in the state.
On questions regarding Governor Yusuf’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Waiya described the move as strategically beneficial for Kano.
“Aligning with the ruling party at the federal level will enhance cooperation and unlock greater federal interventions, projects, and development initiatives across critical sectors,” he said.
He added that residents should expect tangible dividends of democracy in areas such as infrastructure, health, education, and social welfare as a result of the strengthened collaboration between the state and federal governments.
“The defection opens more doors for Kano. Stronger collaboration with the Federal Government will translate into more development for the people,” Waiya concluded.
