Yar’Adua urges stronger troop welfare beyond Remembrance Day ceremonies

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, has urged the Federal Government and Nigerians to translate the symbolism of Armed Forces Remembrance Day into concrete and sustained improvements in the welfare of military personnel.
Speaking as the nation observed the 2026 edition of the annual remembrance, Yar’Adua said the day should serve as more than a ceremonial tribute, but as a call to action to address the everyday realities faced by soldiers on the frontlines. He paid glowing tribute to fallen officers and men whose sacrifices, he said, laid the foundation for Nigeria’s peace and unity.
The senator acknowledged recent efforts by the Federal Government to enhance conditions of service within the Armed Forces, but stressed that emerging security threats require continuous investment in modern equipment, rigorous training, and functional military infrastructure. According to him, adequate welfare and support systems are central to boosting morale and operational effectiveness.
Yar’Adua also emphasised the need for broader institutional and public support for military families, noting that the impact of military service extends beyond those in uniform. He called on state governments to complement federal initiatives by supporting veterans, widows, and dependants of fallen heroes.
Describing Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a moment of national reflection, the lawmaker urged Nigerians to embrace unity and shared responsibility in safeguarding the country’s peace. He said respect and appreciation for the Armed Forces must be shown consistently, not only during commemorative events.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day is marked annually on January 15 in honour of members of the Nigerian Armed Forces who lost their lives in active service, both at home and on international peacekeeping missions.
The senator concluded by reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to legislation that strengthens military welfare and honours the memory of Nigeria’s fallen heroes, praying for eternal rest for their souls.
