Four women, including a pregnant woman, were killed and several others injured on Tuesday in Zugai village, Roni Local Government Area of Jigawa State, after an overhead water tank collapsed while villagers were fetching water.
The solar-powered tank, which supplies water to the community, reportedly gave way as residents gathered beneath it. Eyewitnesses said the tank’s supporting pillars had weakened under the full weight, leading to the sudden collapse.
“Three people died on the spot, while others were rushed to the hospital with injuries,” said Imrana Miko, who witnessed the tragedy.
Comrade Musa Lawal, Chairman of the Maranda Development Association, described the incident as “devastating,” adding that the victims were buried according to Islamic rites.
Dr. Abba Ya’u Roni, Chairman of Roni Local Government Council, confirmed the deaths and said the remaining injured are receiving medical care. “The council has covered all medical expenses. Most have been discharged, with only one woman still under treatment,” he said.
According to Dr. Roni, strong winds at the time contributed to the collapse while villagers were attempting to fetch water.
The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of public infrastructure in rural communities, underscoring the need for regular maintenance and preventive measures to protect residents from similar tragedies.
