As part of activities marking the 2025 World Food Day, the Catalyzing Strengthened Policy for Healthy Diets and Resilience (CASCADE) project organized a vibrant food exhibition and cooking demonstration for women farmers in Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
This year’s celebration, held on October 16 under the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,” focused on promoting sustainable food systems and tackling hunger and malnutrition across communities.
Speaking during the event, CASCADE’s Health and Nutrition Technical Officer, Gara Alheri, described World Food Day as a global reminder of the collective responsibility to achieve food security and better nutrition for all.
She explained that the cooking demonstration featured dishes prepared by local women farmers using ingredients sourced directly from their farms and home gardens.

> “The women showcased their culinary skills with highly nutritious meals such as orange-fleshed sweet potato porridge, vegetable rice, dambu, awara, danwake, and moringa leaves salad,” Alheri said, adding that the nutritional benefits of each meal were also highlighted.
According to her, the initiative reinforces CASCADE’s commitment to improving household food security and reducing malnutrition, especially among women and children.
In his remarks, Sule Mamuda, the Nutrition Focal Person for Jahun LGA, encouraged women to see agriculture as a practical tool for achieving food and economic security within their families and communities.
Also speaking, the Lead of Women in Agriculture, Hajiya Hauwa Killa, emphasized the nutritional importance of orange-fleshed sweet potatoes and urged women to sustain farming practices that build resilience and strengthen local food systems.
