Malami’s Convoy Attacked in Kebbi, APC Washes Hands Off Violence

Birnin Kebbi was thrown into tension on Monday after the convoy of former Attorney-General of the Federation and state leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Abubakar Malami, came under attack from suspected thugs.

The assault, which occurred during a condolence visit, left several supporters injured and about 10 vehicles damaged, eyewitnesses said.
Malami, who served as Justice Minister from 2015 to 2023, accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of masterminding the attack.
“I was in Kebbi only to pay condolences, not for politics. Suddenly, thugs armed with weapons and stones emerged from the APC headquarters, targeting my convoy. Vehicles were smashed, supporters injured. It is unfortunate and unacceptable,” Malami told reporters.
The former minister, now spearheading ADC’s resurgence in Kebbi, vowed not to be intimidated. “When it comes to politics here, there is no retreat, no surrender,” he declared.
But the APC in Kebbi swiftly distanced itself from the incident. State Publicity Secretary, Isa Assalafy, condemned the violence and accused Malami’s security detail of firing shots that escalated the clash.
“No serious government confident of its people’s support would want to disrupt the peace of the state,” Assalafy said, dismissing claims that the party deployed thugs.
As of press time, the Kebbi State Police Command had not released an official statement on the incident. It remains unclear if arrests have been made.
The attack, however, has heightened political tension in Kebbi, a state where shifting loyalties and new alignments ahead of the 2027 elections are already fueling fierce rivalries.
