The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced the successful neutralization of a suspected notorious armed robbery gang leader, marking a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat violent crime in the state.
The operation, conducted by the Command’s tactical team, targeted an armed syndicate responsible for multiple robberies and violent attacks in Ikot Ekpene and surrounding communities.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John in a statement indicated that the operatives of the Command carried out a tactical follow-up operation after the arrest of Imoh Gavin Akpan ‘m’ of Ikot Uboh village, identified as the leader of a dreaded armed robbery syndicate responsible for multiple violent attacks, highway robberies, and other criminal activities in the area.
While in custody, the statenment explained that Akpan volunteered to lead the police to the gang’s hideout in Mbiaso village, which intelligence reports indicated was being used as the syndicate’s armory. Acting on this lead, a team of armed operatives moved to the location under strict operational protocol.

In the exchange, Akpan attempted to break away from police control in a bid to escape. He was hit by a bullet during the confrontation.
The suspect was immediately conveyed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical attention, but he was pronounced dead on arrival by a qualified medical doctor. His remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
A search of the scene led to the recovery of: One (1) locally made shotgun, Two (2) expended cartridges and One (1) live cartridge
The Command has intensified its manhunt for the fleeing gang members, who are now on the run, and urges members of the public to provide useful information that may aid their swift arrest.
The Commissioner of Police reiterates the Command’s unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and property of all residents of Akwa Ibom State and assures that no criminal element will be allowed to operate freely under his watch.
