The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has uncovered what appears to be a gruesome cultist hideout in Abak, leading to the arrest of five suspected cultists linked to armed robbery, rape, and fetish activities.
Acting on a tip-off and following a detailed investigation, police operatives stormed a criminal den on July 30, 2025, at about 11:10 p.m., arresting the suspects believed to be responsible for a recent violent attack at a guest house in the area.
The suspects, identified as Richard Edet Udo, Hope Unibong Anitie, Joseph Ibongidi, Christian Joseph Johnny and Joseph Joseph were accused of breaking into a guest’s room, robbing him of his personal belongings, and brutally raping his female companion during the June 26, 2025 incident in Abak.
During the raid, officers uncovered a shrine-like setup housing two wooden coffins—both reportedly stuffed with used female sanitary pads, photographs of unknown individuals, and fetish materials believed to be used for ritualistic purposes.
Police sources described the hideout as resembling a scene from a horror movie, raising fears of deeper cultist activities in the region.
“This was not just a robbery gang — this was a well-organized cell engaged in criminality laced with suspected ritual practices,” said a senior officer who participated in the operation.
The arrest follows a directive by the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, who ordered a discreet but determined investigation immediately after the case was reported. The command says it will leave no stone unturned in tracking down other fleeing members of the gang.
Speaking on the development, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, assured the public that the Command is committed to eradicating criminal syndicates from the state.
“We urge citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities. The safety of our communities remains a top priority for the Command,” she said.
As investigations continue, residents across Akwa Ibom are breathing a sigh of relief, even as many are still reeling from the shock of the ritual discovery.
