The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has disowned a recent statement issued by Mr. Tony Aziegbemi, dismissing him as an unauthorized voice who lacks the legitimacy to speak on behalf of the party.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the PDP described Aziegbemi as a “self-styled, factional figure of the now-defunct Obaseki camp,” noting that he holds no official position within the current structure of the party.
“Tony Aziegbemi is not the Acting Chairman of the Edo PDP. He has no mandate to issue statements or represent the party in any capacity,” the statement read.
The party condemned his comments on government borrowing, describing them as hypocritical and misleading. According to the PDP, Aziegbemi had remained silent throughout the Obaseki administration, which accumulated massive debts with little to show for it.
“Where was his voice when his principal plunged the state into unprecedented debt? No roads, no industries, no infrastructure—just unaccounted loans and vanishing funds,” the party queried.
The Edo PDP stressed that its current focus is on transparency, accountability, and development. It expressed support for Governor Monday Okpebholo’s plan to secure loans for infrastructure, provided they are used responsibly and transparently.
“We are not opposed to borrowing for development. What we oppose is reckless mismanagement, which defined the Obaseki era.”
The party reiterated its commitment to playing the role of a constructive opposition—offering checks and balances, not political bitterness.
“Let it be clear: Tony Aziegbemi does not speak for us. His comments are personal, irrelevant, and out of tune with the party’s direction.”
The PDP concluded by affirming its resolve to rebuild the party on the foundation of integrity and public trust, not opportunism.
