Natasha-Akpabio Saga: ACF Demands Transparent, Independent Investigation

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has raised concerns over the ongoing controversy in the 10th Senate involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central, describing the situation as deeply troubling and damaging to the Senate’s credibility.

In a statement issued over the weekend, the ACF called for an independent, transparent, and thorough investigation, free from external influence, to address the matter conclusively.
It emphasized that only such an inquiry could restore public confidence in the Senate and ensure justice is served.

The Forum also urged members of the National Assembly to uphold the highest standards of ethics, decorum, and integrity, lamenting what it described as a worrying decline in these values within the 10th Senate.

Amidst the controversy, allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation have surfaced, with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims dominating media discussions. The ACF noted that even her husband had been drawn into the matter, further intensifying public interest and scrutiny.

The ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Professor T. A. Muhammadu-Baba warned that the crisis could severely damage the Senate’s reputation, both nationally and internationally.
He also expressed concerns that the people of Kogi Central were being deprived of effective representation while the dispute remained unresolved.

The Forum further hinted at potential bias, pointing out that so far, only Northern senators have faced severe disciplinary actions, such as suspensions, in the 10th Senate.
It questioned whether this was part of a deliberate pattern or an unfortunate coincidence.

“This situation raises serious questions. While it may seem far-fetched, we cannot ignore the perception that Northern lawmakers have been disproportionately targeted in the 10th Senate. We hope this is not part of a broader anti-Arewa agenda,” the statement read.

To prevent further distraction from critical legislative responsibilities, the ACF reiterated its demand for an open and impartial investigation, allowing the Senate to return to its primary duty of lawmaking.
It also called on the Northern Caucus in the Senate to rally behind Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, ensuring she receives a fair hearing and the respect due to her as a representative of her constituents.
