In a bold move to clamp down on crime, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police (CP), Baba Mohammed Azare, has issued a strong warning to hotel owners and managers across the state: harbor criminals, and your establishment could face immediate closure.
Speaking during a high-level meeting with hospitality industry stakeholders at the Police Headquarters in Uyo on Monday, CP Azare revealed that some hotels are becoming operational hubs for criminal elements, posing a threat to the state’s peace and security.
Police Public Relations Officer
DSP Timfon John, in a statement quoted the CP to have stated,
“We have intelligence reports that criminals are using hotels as safe havens. Any establishment found aiding or abetting such activities will be raided and temporarily shut down for investigations,” the CP said.
The meeting brought together leaders from the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), Nigeria Hotels Association (NHA), and other hospitality bodies.
CP Azare emphasized the importance of maintaining accurate guest records, monitoring activities, and promptly reporting suspicious behavior to law enforcement.
He also called for early intervention, urging hoteliers to act immediately when they notice anything unusual rather than waiting until crimes are committed. “Security is a collective responsibility, and your cooperation is crucial to keeping Akwa Ibom safe,” he added.
President of the Hotels Owners Association, Mr. Daniel Udoh,
commended the Police Commissioner’s proactive stance and pledged the sector’s full cooperation.
“We will implement measures to enhance security in our establishments and ensure that hotels are not used as hideouts for criminals,” Udoh assured.
He also applauded the CP for engaging stakeholders in dialogue, describing the partnership as a step forward in protecting the state’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s safest destinations.
This crackdown comes as part of CP Azare’s broader strategy to maintain Akwa Ibom’s peace and security.
With the hospitality industry now on high alert, the message is clear: Akwa Ibom is no place for criminal activity.
The Police Command has vowed to continue working with the hospitality sector to sustain the state’s tranquility while ensuring that law-abiding businesses can thrive without interference.
By collaborating with law enforcement, hotels in Akwa Ibom are proving that safety and service go hand in hand, solidifying the state’s position as a top destination for residents and tourists alike.
