Two prominent United States-based civil society organizations, Rising Sun Foundation and Ambassadors for Self-Determination, have criticized Igbo political leaders for allegedly failing to sincerely push for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a strongly worded statement on Monday, jointly signed by their representatives, the groups accused governors, politicians, and Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo leaders of prioritizing personal ambitions over the collective welfare of the Igbo people.
The groups described the actions of Igbo leaders as “maramara n’ihu, gwampiti n’azu” (smiling in public, betraying in private), accusing them of covertly ensuring Kanu’s continued detention despite public declarations for his release.

“They may call for his release publicly, yet engage in backroom deals that perpetuate his incarceration,” the statement reads.
As Kanu marks 30 months in detention under the Directorate of State Security Services (DSS), the organizations acknowledged a perceived shift by President Bola Tinubu’s administration toward dialogue on his release. However, they noted that Kanu remains the only political detainee in a list of activists, including Sunday Igboho and Omoyele Sowore, who have been released.

“The selective application of justice raises serious questions about fairness and systemic issues within the Nigerian political landscape,” they noted.
The groups demanded an immediate united front from Igbo leaders in Nigeria and the diaspora, urging governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and Ohanaeze leaders to amplify efforts for Kanu’s release.

“Kanu’s detention is not just a personal tragedy—it symbolizes the broader struggle for the Igbo nation’s survival and dignity. As long as he remains imprisoned, the entire Igbo nation is held captive,” the statement emphasized.

Drawing parallels with global struggles for freedom, the CSOs highlighted the urgency of adhering to court rulings and United Nations directives mandating Kanu’s unconditional release.

“The time is ticking, and the potential for unrest is growing. If we unite, we can secure Kanu’s release and pave the way for a future marked by freedom and progress,” the statement concluded.

The Rising Sun Foundation and Ambassadors for Self-Determination have called for intensified efforts to ensure Kanu’s freedom, warning that the consequences of his continued detention could be dire for the Igbo people and the Nigerian state.

Delta State Governor, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, has initiated a significant cabinet reshuffle by relieving Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza of his duties as Commissioner for Information.
While the reasons behind Osuoza’s dismissal remain undisclosed, sources indicated that alleged concerns over his performance may have influenced the decision.

In the interim, the Governor has directed Charles Aniagwu, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads), to oversee the Ministry of Information alongside his current portfolio.
Aniagwu, who brings years of experience from his tenure as Chief Press Secretary and Commissioner for Information under former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, is expected to resume his dual responsibilities on Monday.

Dr. Fred Latimor Oghenesivbe, Director General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communication, confirmed that Osuoza had been briefed on the development and stated that an official announcement from the Governor would soon follow.

Political observers suggest the reshuffle reflects Governor Oborevwori’s drive to enhance the efficiency of his administration and address lingering challenges within key ministries. The move has sparked conversations within Delta State’s political circles, with many anticipating further adjustments in the Governor’s team.

Aniagwu’s appointment is seen as a strategic choice, given his extensive experience and familiarity with the workings of the Ministry of Information. His dual role is expected to streamline communication strategies while maintaining progress on rural road projects across the state.

In a significant turn of events, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the influential socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, has elected former Senator John Azuta-Mbata as its new President-General. The election, which took place on Friday at the General Assembly meeting in Enugu, saw Azuta-Mbata, who previously represented Rivers East in the National Assembly, succeed Nze Ozichukwu Fidelis Chukwu.
Chukwu’s appointment in December was to complete the tenure of Imo State, previously held by the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.
The peaceful election process, marked by consensus, was attended by notable political figures, including Governors Peter Mbah of Enugu, Hope Uzodimma of Imo, and Charles Soludo of Anambra, with Ebonyi State’s Deputy Governor representing the state.

Alongside Azuta-Mbata’s election, Prince Okey Nwadinobi of Abia State was named National Deputy President, and Chief Emeka Sibeidu from Anambra was appointed Secretary-General.
Sibeidu, a former Deputy Governor of Anambra, brings significant political experience to the position.

In his acceptance speech, Azuta-Mbata expressed profound gratitude to the delegates for entrusting him with the role and promised to work tirelessly toward uniting the Igbo people. He emphasized that addressing critical issues affecting the Igbo community would be his top priority, and he vowed to outline his four-year manifesto in an upcoming press briefing.
The election marked a fresh chapter for Ohanaeze Ndigbo as Azuta-Mbata steps into the role, promising to steer the group towards greater unity and progress for the Igbos.
