The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has issued a strong condemnation of the Kogi State Government’s handling of local government elections, citing a series of reckless actions that exacerbate an already precarious situation in the state.
The party’s National Working Committee expressed deep concern over the government’s decision to proceed with elections during a time when over 180 communities are submerged due to severe flooding.
In a public statement, the SDP criticized the Kogi State Electoral Commission for allegedly violating the Electoral Act 2022 and disregarding a pending Federal High Court case related to the elections. The party accused the commission of tampering with its candidates’ list and acting beyond its constitutional mandate.
National Secretary, SDP, Dr. Olu Agunloye in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday said,
“The actions of the Kogi State Government are insensitive and detrimental to the welfare of our citizens,” stated Dr. Olu Agunloye, National Secretary of the SDP.
“At a time when the nation is grappling with economic instability, hunger, and insecurity, Kogi State is facing its own challenges, including unpaid salaries and the impacts of flooding.”
The SDP highlighted the urgency for the Federal Government and Kogi State authorities to intervene and restore order.
They warned that the current governance issues could lead to broader unrest and negatively impact the stability of the region.
As the State continued to struggle with the aftermath of flooding that has displaced approximately 260,000 residents, the SDP is called for an immediate reassessment of the electoral process to ensure fairness and justice for the people of Kogi.
