Reps move to halt suspension of flights to, from Nigeria by Emirates Airlines

The Honourable Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila and the Leadership of House of Representatives have moved to resolve the issues in the aviation industry which has prompted the Emirates Airlines to announce its withdrawal from operating on the Nigeria’s route.
Emirates announced in a statement Thursday that it has put a hold on flight operations in and out of Nigeria due to its inability to repatriate funds from the West African country.
The Speaker and the House leadership have therefore requested the Chairman House Committee on Aviation (Hon. Nnoli Nnaji) and House of Representatives Management to immediately set a date for a meeting with all Stakeholders in the Aviation sector and the Executive Arm of government to find urgent solutions to the issues in contention.
A statement to that effect by the Clerk, House of Representatives Dr. Yahaya Danzaria said the leadership and the speaker have been briefed on the disturbing notice of withdrawal of services recently issued by some International Airline operators in the country.

Specifically, the statement quoted the speaker to have directed for an invitation for an emergency meeting, to be extended to:

  1. ​Minister for Finance,
  2. ​CBN Governor,
  3. ​Special Adviser to the President on Ease of Doing Business,
  4. Minister for Aviation,
  5. ​DG NCAA,
  6. ​Country Rep, IATA.
  7. ​Emirate Country Manager.
  8. ​Chairman, Aviation Committee, House of Representatives
    9.​Chairman, Banking & Currency, committee House of Representatives,
  9. ​Chairman, Finance Committee, House of Representatives

The statement directed further that the date of the meeting should be communicated to all the concerned Stakeholders and organisations.

Meanwhile, the Hon. Speaker has requested all parties in the matter, and specifically, the Emirates airlines to suspend any action and await the outcome of the meeting.

He assured that the Executive Arm of Government is taking necessary steps to avert any crisis in the Aviation sector.
